The Yaesu VX-8R HT provides a full 5 watts FM on 50/144/430 MHz plus 1.5 watts on 222 MHz. It supports Bluetooth® hands-free operation with the optional BU-1 and BH-1 or BH-2 accessories. There is also an optional GPS unit and antenna with loads of features.

This radio supports APRS 1200/9600 bps data communication (B band only). Like the VX7R, the VX8R is submersible and meets IPX57 specifications (3 feet for minimum of 30 minutes). A powerful 7.4 V 1100 mAh Lithium Ion battery is included. This HT is small, intuitive to operate only 2.36 x 3.74 x 0.92 inches (thinner than VX-7R).

It supports simultaneous independent 2-signal dual receive function with both V + V or U + U. It has weather band receive with Weather Alert. A barometric sensor is included. You can even operate Amateur radio while receiving FM broadcasts!

The receive coverage is wider than VX-7R it replaces, with an independent AM/FM broadcast receiver circuit. The dot matrix LCD display provides Memory tag up to a maximum of 16 characters. You even get a high-resolution Spectrum Analyzer with ±60 channels indication with wave monitoring of received/modulated signal! And of course DCS and CTCSS encode and decode is standard.

The ICOM IC-7000 is the latest IF-DSP based HF radio from Icom. It is roughly the same size as the wildly popular IC-706 series. It features DSP at the IF level. In fact, the 7000 employs two DSP chips to work its magic. Imagine having 41 bandwidths available – standard! You can even select sharp or soft filter shape. And variable twin PBT allows you to either narrow the IF passband, or shift the entire passband to eliminate QRM. All the controls are intuitive to use. The Yaesu FT-2000 is a full sized man’s rig with great sounding audio. One can listen to this radio for hours on end without it wearing you down. The ability to upgrade firmware in this radio is a big plus. The DMU also adds some great features, especially if you’re married to the band scope, you can get a nice, large, flat screen LCD to view it on.

The FT-2000 provides a full 100 Watts of power output (AM: 25 W) on the 160-6 Meter Amateur bands, and the U.S. version includes a special memory bank containing the five 60-meter channels, as well. ICOM has followed all the success of the beautiful IC-7800 with the smaller, single receiver IC-7700. It utilizes two separate 32-bit floating point TI DSP chips, has a 7-inch wide TFT display, built in RTTY/PSK31 receive and transmit using a USB Keyboard interface, external video connection, high res spectrum scope, plus high voltage MOSFET 200 Watt PA.

Large size and superb ergonomics, its a beautiful and easy to use radio
The bandscope is superb, it would have been nice if click and tune with say a plug in
mouse was available.
The receiver is great even though its not chart topping or better than a radio like the K3 in key receiver metrics. The K3 is a better CW radio and on crowded bands like 40 meters during big contests the K3 eats the IC7700. For everyday use its great and its low noise/hiss receiver is great. You can hear the superior in band IMD and lack of peak distortion on the received signals when compared to other radios. Very weak signal detection is superior to the K3 on SSB. When the signals hardly move the S-meter they much easier to copy than my K3. However the K3 will hear anything that the IC7700 will. Its just easier copy on the IC7700. On SSB the IC7700 is better receiver in my opinion. The K3 with its quirky roofing filters and non centered IF shift always make the receiver sound hissy. The IC7700 seems to resolve signals much better.
Built in power supply is great.
200 Watts of output is superb and it produces this with no power spikes and very smooth power control. I was expecting much better transmitter IMD performance than the QST review returned. However the IC7700 has much less transmitted crud than my K3.
Fantastic receiver stability. The K3 even after close to 2 years since its release still does not have the TCXO compensation ready yet. This stability thing becomes an unhealthy obsession when you have an Rubidium standard!

Another HF/VHF/UHF receiver/scanner from Icom, this is the latest and greatest. It can tune AM/AM-N/AM-W/FM/FM-N/WFM/SSB/CW from 0.1-2000 MHz. The HF sensitivity is amazing, so small antennas work without an outboard preamp. The R-8500 is a great receiver and worth the relatively high price.

Good points: high sensitivity, good selectivity on SSB/CW and narrow FM, no birdies, no overload suffering, three antenna connectors on the back, very simple to use, good IF shift, very low frequency image level.
Bad points: poor selectivity on wide FM (230 kHz, not suitable for FM and TV DX), no miraculous noise blanker, no VFO but memories as VFO, low deflection of the S-meter.

The Icom IC-R7000 is one of the most sophisticated, continuous coverage receivers on the used market today. It is a HF/VHF/UHF receiver/scanner that covers 25-2000 MHz

The Icom R7000 VHF-UHF receiver covers from 25 to 999 and 1025 to 2000 MHz in the following modes: AM, AM-W, FM, FM-W, FM-N, USB and LSB. The R7000 covers nearly 2000 MHz of spectrum to include low band, VHF civil and military aeronautical bands, marine, business, FM, amateur, government and TV bands. 99 memories store frequency and mode and may be selected by simply pressing the memory switch, then rotating the memory channel knob or by direct keyboard entry. Scan modes include full-scan, programmed-scan, mode-scan, selected-scan, priority-scan and auto write programmed-scan. By depressing the Auto-M switch, the receiver automatically memorizes frequencies in use while the unit is in the scan mode. Modes include: FM-Wide, FM-Narrow, AM, USB and LSB. Six tuning speeds: 0.1, 1.0, 5, 10, 12.5 or 25 kHz. Requires 117/240 VAC.

The build quality of the IC-R7000 is considerably above that of most consumer scanning radios. The R7000 will go down in history as the first multi-mode scanning receiver with real RF performance and serious build quality.
